MALDIVES: Meemu Atoll Boahuraa, Beach Cleanup

On 04th and 05th November, the PROMISE team of Parley Maldives conducted beach clean-ups at Meemu Atoll Boahuraa, an uninhabited island in the Maldives. This event was joined by 83 participants, including communities in Meemu Atoll. Despite Day 2 being a rainy Saturday morning, 70 participants from the community showed up.

On Day 1, a total of 637 kilograms of waste was collected, out of which, 553.7 kg of plastics were sent to Parley for closed-loop recycling. On the second cleanup, 691.9 kg of total debris which included 573.8 KG of recyclable plastic and 118.1 KG of other debris (consisting mainly of styrofoam) waste was collected.

A total of 1127.5 kg of debris was collected over two days. This included 1127.5 kg of recyclable plastic and 201.4 kg of other debris. Project PROMISE aims to reach a target of 1000 tonnes of litter from the Lakshadweep shorelines of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and India.
